Vaporizers Category Banner

The very fist “vaporizer”, although by today’s standards it wouldn’t be considered a true vaporizer, was released back in 1994. Since then, they have evolved into powerful hardware that has only improved and increased in popularity year to year. Vaporizers are electronic devices that use a “oven” or “chamber” in which you place your media to be heated at very high temperatures, but without actually conducting or combusting the media. Nowadays, there are vaporizers for tobacco, dry herbs, wax, e-liquids, and all kinds of cannabis concentrates. The end result when using a vaporizer is vapor, not smoke, so it is considered to be a healthier alternative to smoking as no combustion or carcinogens often associated with smoking are involved in vaping. Vaporizers have come a long way since 1994, and today’s vaporizers come in all shapes and sizes and are capable of handling any kind of media type you throw at it. Some vaporizers are capable of vaping different kinds of media with a change of an atomizer or addition of an accessory. The vaporizer you choose is totally up to what you plan on using it for, whether you’ll be using it indoors or outdoors, your budget, and many other factors. Hopefully, this article will shed some light and help you pick the very best vaporizer for you.

When it comes to cannabis products, as we explained in our article: “Vape for the Ultimate Effect”, there is no better and healthier way to consume cannabis or cannabis related products. No matter what your preferred method of consuming cannabis is, there is no questioning the fact that vapor inhalation is way healthier than smoke inhalation. Whether you currently use quality paper, wraps, or even water filtered bongs or pipes, at the end of the day you are still burning away some of the beneficial compounds found in herb before they reach your lungs and you are also consuming many many different harmful carcinogens in the process. Some of these carcinogens have been linked to cancer. So if you analyze this for one second, common sense will tell you that smoking cannabis is actually counter-productive. Another benefit of vaping is that you preserve your expensive and precious media, and you get even more out of the media you do use when compared to smoking. Vaping cannabis or cannabis related products gives you a more powerful, cleaner, and immediate effect when compared to smoking. Our friends over at Leafly wrote a great article on “The Differences between Vaping vs. Smoking Cannabis”. Take a look at that article for a little more in-depth analysis of the benefits of vaping vs. smoking.

Another great advantage of vaping is how discreet it can be with the right device. The aromas produced when vaping are subtle, a stark contrast to the powerful and pungent smell of cannabis when it is smoked the conventional way. It’s hard to go just about anywhere now-a-days and not see someone vaping in public. Most of the devices are small, discreet, and are barely visible when in use. This is perfect for micro-dosing or simply taking a few hits while on your lunch break. Imagine trying to do that with a joint or other conventional method of consuming cannabis. The smell will stick to you like glue and there is NOTHING discreet about that at all. With vaping, there is no lingering and smelly smoke to ruin your discreet session.

There are several different types of vaporizers. There are Desktop Vaporizers, Portable Vaporizers, and Pen-Style Vaporizers. All of these vaporizers mentioned above are capable of vaping all kinds of different media. Some ‘multi-function” vaporizers are capable of handling several different types of media. These are usually the more expensive kind as you can probably imagine. Besides their form-factor, there are other features that some vaporizers have that others don’t which often can affect your vaping experience. For instance, all of the vaporizers mentioned above can also be further broken down into two different categories - “Convection” or “Conduction” style vaporizers. We’ll discuss that a little further in the article, but to put it short, the two styles basically describe the type of heating method used by that particular vaporizer. Another key feature to look out for is if the vape has full temperature control, or has pre-set heating temperatures. Some units have simple interfaces with a single button, these allow you to choose between certain optimized temperatures, other units allow for precise temperature control down to the degree. As you can imagine, these units are often more expensive, but they offer much more flexibility. To learn a little more about the best temperature settings for your vaporizer or media, check out this article from our friends over at LeafScience: Vaping 101 - What Temperature is Best. It is a great idea to read an article like this before using your brand new vape. It’ll ensure that you get the very best experience when you first start vaping without bumping your head around trying to figure things out on your own. That’s if you decide to get a model that features precision temperature control. Here is a breakdown of the most common types of vaporizers available today.

Best Portable Vaporizer

  • Portable Vaporizers

Portable vaporizers, and Vape pens (Described more in detail next), are smaller units that are battery powered and offer the flexibility of being able to take them out on the road or wherever your travels may lead you. Usually discreet and portable vaporizers fit easily in your pocket or purses, and are barely visible from a distance during use. Because of the latest innovations in vaping technology, these small vapes have become the go-to hardware for vaping enthusiasts because of their portability and convenience. When vaporizer technology was in its infancy, the smaller units usually performed poorly and some combusted or came close to combusting the media in the chamber. The newer units provide more robust and flavorful clouds of vapor without sacrificing portability.

Some of the best selling devices at King of Vapes™ are portable vaporizers. This is because most desktop vaporizers, although superior in performance, are large, clumsy, are tethered to a household power supply, and can only be used indoors. The only way it can be used outdoors if you’re lucky enough to have a safe outdoor weather-proof power supply. But in a situation like this, you are not afforded any privacy because of the device’s size. The Davinci IQ and PAX 3 vaporizers are some of the hottest selling units in our store. They are the latest and greatest in vaporizer technology and pack a mean punch in a small package. Hence, their extreme popularity. Most portable vapes today use micro USB interfaces for charging, which means you can charge up from a lap-top, vehicle, or just about anywhere there’s a USB powered hub.

Best Vape Pens

  • Vape Pens

Vape Pens are undoubtedly the most discreet and popular vaporizers available on the market today. Because of their tiny stature, and pen-like shapes, there isn’t a more discreet and stylish way to vape. Most of these “pen-style” devices are used with e-liquids, wax, or other forms of concentrates. Wax Pens are the best selling vape pens in our store at the moment is there is no questioning why. Vape Pens are lightweight, discreet, stylish, and the newer high-end models perform just as well as other portable vaporizers that are larger and have more powerful batteries. With the increasing popularity of cannabis concentrates, and the extreme portability, styling and discreetness of these devices, it is a marriage made in heaven. The second most popular use of vape pens is for e-juice consumption. Most devices you see out in the wild are e-liquid vapes. The beauty of portable or pen style vapes is that you can’t really tell what the person is vaping. It can be e-liquid, wax, or oily concentrates. We believe this is what makes them so popular amongst cannabis connoisseurs.

Vape Pens are usually the go-to device for newcomers to the vaping scene. This is because of their stylish and discreet design, but also because of their ease of use. Since these units are usually the size of a pencil, literally, the interface on these models is super easy to use. They usually feature “single-button’ operation and are pretty much click-and go! No fancy tutorials or videos to watch, just click the button a few times and you are ready to vape. Because of their smaller stature, they also offer very appealing prices. The most expensive pen-style vape we’ve carried in just under $200, and that is rare, most go for between $20 - $100. With the advancements in vaporizer technology, battery technology and atomizers, these units reach vaping temps almost instantaneously and don’t take too long to fully recharge.

Best Desktop Vaporizers

  • Desktop Vaporizers

We’ve sang the praises to portable and pen-style vapes, but let’s take a closer look at the often underestimated and overlooked “Desktop Vaporizers”. Desktop Vaporizers are often overlooked by newcomers to the vaping scene because of their size and more often than not, their hefty price tags. Most desktop vapes can go for $50 all the way up to almost $600! But as you can imagine, you can’t expect stellar performance from a $50 Desktop unit. But, despite their size and hefty price tags, they still remain the go-to devices for serious cannabis enthusiasts. This is for one main reason: POWER! Desktop units more often than not have very powerful heating elements and have higher quality components in general. These units don’t sacrifice power for portability, instead they offer the most bang for your buck as far as durability and vapor production is concerned. The Herbalizer Vaporizer is the most expensive Desktop Vaporizer on the market, but it is also one of the all-time favorites for vaping enthusiasts. Another powerhouse desktop vape is the Volcano Vaporizer from Storz & Bickel. Both of the desktop units mentioned above feature “forced-air” technology which pretty much pushes the vapor out of the unit, no need to pull or draw out of mouthpieces or tubes. These forced air units also allow you to conveniently store the vapor in “balloon bags” for storage and later use. How convenient is that?!?

Desktop vaporizers also offer several different ways of inhaling from the device. There are Balloon-Style devices like mentioned above that use high quality plastic balloon bags, there are whip-style units, and also units that allow for “steamrolling”.  Whip-style desktop units use “whips” or rubber hoses through which you inhale. Steamrolling refers to the use of a water bubbler attachment which uses water to cool and moisture-condition the vapor before it gets into your precious lungs. Like portable vaporizers, these desktop units sometimes allows for the use of several different media types and offer the flexibility of different inhalation methods.

Rip and Ditch Vaporizer

  • Disposable Vaporizers

There's not much to say about disposable vaporizers because they are pretty new to the scene. Most disposable vaporizers are of the e-liquid variety, but they have recently started to release these units for wax or oily concentrates. These vaporizers have two advantages: They are extremely affordable, the Rip & Ditch Disposable Vape Pen by HoneyStick can be purchased at our store for just $14.95. You might be able to find other disposable vape pens for about $10, but they aren't backed by a reputable vendor like HoneyStick, which has been around for a while now and have a great lineup of products. Because these units are so affordable and discreet, most

If you are new to vaping, visiting a website and being bombarded with tons of info about vaping and vaporizers in general can be confusing, and often puts off people that are looking for healthier alternatives to smoking cigarettes or cannabis. Honestly, we understand, we were once there. But it isn’t so complicated after all. Some of the important things to consider before making the leap are: What will you be using this unit for? Will it be used indoors, outdoors, or both? And, more importantly, what is your budget for this new device. You might be thinking that you should go cheap your first time around, but we have found this to be counter-intuitive. Like anything else on the market today, with vaporizers, you get what you pay for. If you cheap out on your very first unit, poor performance from that particular unit might discourage you from vaping period, and that would be a waste of time and money. Most of the medium-level to high-level vaporizers are quite affordable nowadays and as the technology improves, even the smaller/cheaper units are starting to perform pretty well. So, in the case of vaporizers, it is best to save your pennies till your ready to purchase a mid-level unit once you’ve decided what you will be using it for, and where.

By now you may be asking yourself, what magic is taking place behind the scenes to produce healthy vapor and not harmful smoke? The answer is simple: precise temperature control. A good vaporizer that outputs robust vapor production does everything a bong, dab rig, water pipe, and pipe can do, but only way better. The only difference is that there is absolutely no combustion involved when vaping. You see, vaporizers heat up the media to just that perfect sweet-spot, enough to get the media to release it’s compounds, but it never burns it. Studies show that when smoking cannabis, 70% of the beneficial compounds are burned away before they are even inhaled. When vaping this simply does not happen. Temperatures are kept in check and all of the healthy compounds in cannabis are kept in tact and eventually inhaled by healthier and cooler vapor instead. LeafScience has written a great article on The Advantages of Vaping Medical Cannabis, have a look there for more in-depth coverage on the benefits of vaping cannabis.

Convection vs Conduction Vaporizers

Whether it’s a vape pen, portable vape, or desktop vaporizer, all vaporizers fall into two different categories as far as the heating method is concerned: Conduction or Convection. We’ll discuss those a little more in detail.

  • Convection Heating

Convection style vapes use a heating method that involves heat circulating around the chamber, but the material does not touch a hot surface at all. This is the preferred method because there is no chance of combustion, and also because the media is usually vaporized evenly and more efficiently. Of course this entails having the heating element and chamber completely separated in order to avoid combustion. These vaporizers usually have a higher price tag than Conduction vaporizers.

  • Conduction Heating

Conduction style vaporizers on the other hand heat up the media using a hot surface that’s usually in direct contact with the heating element. These units do have one advantage, because the heating element comes into direct contact with the chamber, they usually heat up faster than a convection style unit. But, this has it’s drawbacks. Because the media is coming into direct contact with the heating element, some of the material in the chamber might not vaporize evenly. This might force the user to move the material around to ensure that it is vaporized evenly.

King of Vapes has hundreds of different vaporizers available, we hope that this article can help you make an informed decision. Let’s take a look at other, often missed details you should consider before your purchase.

  • What am I going to be vaping?

The very first thing you should ask yourself is what kind of media will you be vaping? Will it be just one media type, or several? Multi-Purpose vaporizers are available that are pretty efficient at handling more than one media type.

  • Will I be doing most of my vaping behind closed doors, outdoors, or both?

This will play a major part in which type of vaporizer best suits your needs. If you’re looking for a vape that’s super discreet and can just be whipped out just about anywhere without blowing your cover, then you’ll need a vape pen, or portable vape. If home use is your thing, then desktop is the way to go.

  • What is my budget?

Vaporizers range from $10, all the way up to over $600. You don’t have to break the bank when making your purchase, but remember, you get what you pay for. Especially with vaporizers.

  • Is the manufacturer of the vape I have chosen reputable?

Most well established vape manufacturers offer robust warranties on their devices. This is a true testament to the quality and confidence the company has on their product. Always ask about warranty before making your purchase.

We hope this helps, if not, we’re always available through phone, text, email, or chat. Don’t be afraid to reach out to us and have one of our specialists guide you every step of the way when making your informed decision.
